BEAUTY: Rock Plum Make-up like Blue Mbombo

Get a tip for their beauty and rock that plum make-up like Diski Divas star and former Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble representative, Duchess Blue Mbombo.

Whether it be plum, wine or burgundy hues, dark red make-up is both flattering and wearable. And with all the big cosmetics brands offering great tones for nails, lips and eyes, there’s no better time to give this edgy colour a whirl.

Perhaps the easiest way to try the trend is through a cool burgundy-tinged manicure. Working well with fall’s dusky palettes, there are many fashion-forward hues to try at the moment. Apply two coats for a plumped up, salon-style glossy finish.

Dark reds work on all skin tones and are a great medium between red and pink lipsticks. And the colour also makes teeth look nice and white! Those with fair complexions should look for shades which have a plum base in order to get a beautiful contrast with the skin.

Drop those boring beige eyeshadows and mix-up your eye make-up with a pretty sweep of plum.
While people with warmer skin tones should look to try a rich colour with a brown base, such as Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in Divine Wine, which delivers vibrant pigment while feeling lightweight.

A dash of deep red can instantly open up the eyes, though it’s best to stick with one shade and keep the rest of your make-up minimal. Try MAC Eye Shadow in Cranberry, a red-plum with pink shimmer, or branch out with ColourPop’s Drift, a berry hue with a pearlised finish, which really makes eyes pop.

It takes a couple of layers over eye primer to impart a full colour payoff, but can also be used with a light hand for a subtle shine. Finish the look by rimming the lower lashline with a touch of brown eye pencil and lashings of black mascara.
